 Life at Tiqets

Working at Tiqets

At Tiqets we are changing how our customers experience culture. As a Tiqeteer, you will learn and you will teach; inspire and be inspired; intellectually challenge and be challenged. You will have fun, you will entertain, you will have freedom, autonomy, and work as part of a cohesive team.

What you and your team will do:

We work in cross-functional teams combining roles such as Product Manager, Design, Backend, Frontend, Data Analysis. As a backend engineer, you will be part of our B2B, B2C, or enabler teams. Our B2B and B2C teams focus on optimising the connection with our venues and suppliers, making tickets available to customers and distributors, ensuring the optimal checkout experience both on web and our App. The Enabler teams power the growth of Tiqets on the operational, technical, and business sides.

What you will need:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience as a developer working in an agile product development environment.

  • Great Python skills. Skilled in other programming languages like Ruby, Java, C#, Go, React is a plus, but not necessary

  • Good understanding of relational databases like PostgreSQL

  • Any experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)

  • Able to translate requirements into well-designed technical solutions and effective communication skills

  • Living in the Netherlands/EU region

As a Backend Developer at Tiqets, you will solve and code complex, technical problems in a clean way. Writing clean code for us means well-structured, easily readable, scalable, performant, and well-tested solutions that you are proud to deliver to production. As someone working on our backend, finding the right balance between not making too many shortcuts, but also not overengineering is essential. In a cross-functional team, you will play an important role in pushing our technology further. We use mostly Python in the backend, supported by a myriad of AWS services. We encourage everyone to reach outside team boundaries to help out. Our weak code ownership invites you to make changes to any part of our system if needed. This could range from setting up a new database cluster in Terraform to writing an Airflow DAG pipeline to export your data needs into our data warehouse. This kind of flexibility makes all our backend engineers into individual powerhouses that help push big architectural changes forward and achieve amazing things in short iterations, without too much overhead.

Projects we are working on

One of the big topics from our technical roadmap this year is splitting code from our monolith into smaller services. As we run our code on Kubernetes, our architecture is ready to support this as setting up a new service is as easy as cookie-cutting our service templates. However, the challenge lies in where to draw the boundaries between our domains, grouping functionality together and then splitting them off from the main codebase. By doing this we not only make our platform more resilient and our pipelines faster, it also helps to scale in a more reactive way. Besides these architectural challenges, we are also working on some bigger product features. That could be anything from rethinking our pricing strategies to allow more dynamic pricing to having more accurate availability for our tickets. Or improving the many portals we have for our distributors and suppliers. There is a lot to work on and as a backend engineer, you will have a lot of freedom to use your expertise to the fullest where it is needed the most.

The hiring process

We care about transparency so we are very open about our processes. Our recruiter will have a first introductory call with you. Then we have a technical call with our Hiring Manager which lasts about 30-45 minutes. If we decide to proceed, we will ask you to come up with a production-ready solution for a technical problem that you can work on offline. Don’t expect to be asked to build a whole system or set of components, the assignment should take you no longer than a couple of hours. A couple of senior backend engineers will review your submission. Based on their evaluation we will invite you to our main offices in Amsterdam for the interview rounds, or remote if applicable.

The topic of the first interview will be about that assignment and your solution. The second interview will cover more in-depth knowledge about programming topics in general. The third and final interview focuses on cultural fit and the topics can be very diverse. Remember that during all these sessions you will have ample time to ask any questions as well. After all these interactions we both should have a good idea if there is a match. We aim to make an offer as quickly as possible which usually is within a couple of days!

We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply to Tiqets. We always look for different perspectives, and we are eager to further diversify our company. Currently, we take pride in having over 45 different nationalities working at Tiqets and that number is growing every month!
